My Role

As lead designer on the Onboarding team, I spearheaded the 0 to 1 design of Lattice’s first Welcome Content experience in the HRIS Onboarding product over the span of 3 months, shaping both the vision and interaction design. I worked closely with engineers to address technical constraints and engaged with leadership to advocate for extended QA processes, ensuring the final product was polished and delivered a top-quality user experience.

Problem & Business Impact

Lattice's Onboarding product is a powerful solution that ensures compliance with essential documents and keeps teams aligned through automated workflows. There’s a significant opportunity to elevate the experience by personalizing the journey for every new hire, driving engagement, efficiency, and long-term employee success. By creating and integrating welcome content into the onboarding flow, we can drive more engaging onboarding experiences, positioning Lattice HRIS as a key differentiator in the market.

The Solution

Lattice’s new Welcome Content experience empowers People teams to craft engaging content for key moments in the employee journey—such as company and team introductions, benefits overviews, and personalized welcome messages—ensuring new hires feel connected, supported, and ready to contribute from day one.

Establishing key surfaces

To ensure a seamless experience that accounted for the entire journey for adding and viewing Welcome Content, I identified three key surfaces we needed to build:

  • The build experience – Where and how do admins create and configure Welcome Content?

  • The integration experience – How do admins integrate Welcome Content into the new hire onboarding flow?

  • The view experience – Where and how do new hires access and engage with Welcome Content?

Defining the build experience

This project involved close collaboration with Product and Engineering to define scope and feasibility, with the timeline shortened from 12 weeks to 6 due to shifting priorities.

A key design challenge was defining the build experience for Welcome Content. I explored whether to offer full customization or a streamlined, template-based setup. I opted for an approach that combined both ideas , as users preferred a focused, intuitive interface with accessible editing controls for quick content creation without super complex customization. I worked with engineers to prioritize key functionalities for the MVP, including section editing and content rearranging.

Summary of main builder iterations

A key focus was integrating Lattice’s rich text editor with dynamic variables, which was refined to meet the revised scope. I also collaborated with design system engineers to implement new font resizing capabilities for enhanced text customization across Lattice.

Rich text editor update

To enhance the user experience, I partnered with Lattice’s Brand team to design a set of engaging illustrations for Welcome Content pages, adding craft and delight. Looking ahead, the vision is to expand these illustrations for various events, further enriching customization options.

Defining the integration experience

The add experience focused on updating the admin onboarding setup flow by incorporating Welcome Content as a new, essential step in the onboarding process.

I focused on understanding whether Lattice should have an opinionated approach on where Welcome Content fits in onboarding and how to clearly indicate which pages users can add or remove. For the MVP, I chose a timeline-based framework, which provided users clear visibility into when Welcome Content would appear in the new hire journey.

Impact

Launched in Spring 2024, Welcome Content received strong praise from both customers and the company, reinforcing Lattice’s position in the HRIS market. At the summer all-hands, my team highlighted its success and unveiled the 2.0 vision—Lattice’s Content Center, a centralized hub for employee information, now a key 2025 priority. This launch has elevated Lattice’s Onboarding product, driving differentiation and long-term strategic impact.

As internal teams and customers adopt this feature, success will be measured through adoption rates and feedback on workflow efficiency. These insights will not only gauge impact but also validate and inform the 2.0 vision, ensuring continued innovation and value.
